Certification by industry
Each industry has its own reason for asking for a certificate, and its own first questions. Choose yours below. If your work is not listed, the same standards are open to you, and the section after the industries shows how they apply.
01Industries
Four industries, each with its own page
Each page sets out the questions we ask every enquiry from that industry, answers them, and names the standards that address them.

Manufacturing
How do you currently manage quality control and customer complaints?

IT companies
How do you manage information security and client data protection?

Food industry
Do you have a food safety management system in your facility?

Hospitals and medical devices
Are you maintaining regulatory compliance for medical devices or healthcare services?
02Everyone else
If your industry is not on the list
Management system standards are written for any organization, whatever it makes or does.
The standards describe how an organization runs its work, not what it makes. That is why construction and engineering contractors, logistics and warehousing firms, oil and gas services companies, schools and colleges, hotels, public bodies and professional firms use the same standards as the four industries above. Four examples show how they usually apply.
Construction and engineering contractors
ISO 9001 for how work is planned, inspected and handed over, and ISO 45001 because clients who let contractors onto their sites often ask for evidence of a safety system. ISO 14001 is added where the client sets environmental conditions for work on site.
Logistics and warehousing
ISO 9001 for how orders are handled and how damage and late delivery are recorded and corrected. ISO 45001 for vehicles and lifting, and ISO 22000 where you store or move food.
Oil and gas services
Clients that approve contractors often ask for ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, which share one structure and can be audited together. If a client also names a sector standard, ask which one and which edition before you apply.
Professional firms
ISO 9001 for how engagements are accepted, carried out, reviewed and closed. ISO/IEC 27001 where clients ask how you protect the information they give you.
Hotels, schools and colleges, public bodies and others use the standards in the same way. A hotel kitchen is a food business, so ISO 22000 applies to it. A school or a public office delivers a service, and ISO 9001 can be used to organize how it plans, delivers and checks that service.
