Six things, and what each one changes
Certification bodies do not choose audit time freely. Accreditation rules set it, and these are the things the rules look at.
The standard
Which standard or standards you want, and the edition if a client or tender has named one.
What you do
Your products or services and main processes. Complex or higher-risk work takes longer to audit than simple, repetitive work.
People
Headcount is the starting point for audit time. Count everyone whose work falls inside the scope, including shifts and regular contractors.
Locations
Each location is audited, or a sample of them where the rules allow sampling. More locations mean more time.
What you hold now
Any certificate you already have. It may be transferred, or a new standard added to audits you already have.
Support
Whether you want certification only, or implementation support first. Support is quoted separately and delivered by different people from the audit.
